The Second Japan-Uzbekistan University Presidents Meeting was held at the Management Development Institute of Singapore (MDIS) in the city of Tashkent on November 13.
Attendees from the University of Tsukuba included Vice President Caroline Fern Benton, Professor Masaki Ono of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, Central Asian Office Director of the University of Tsukuba, and Hiroyoshi Matsuzaki, Head of the Office of Global Initiative.
The meeting aimed to promote exchanges between young researchers in Uzbekistan and Japan and to advance the cultivation of human resources in the two countries. Dignitaries from eighteen Japanese universities and sixty-two Uzbek universities attended the meeting to exchange opinions.
The meeting began with a welcome speech by the following people: MDIS Rector Jasur Salikhov; Dr. Alisher Vakhabov, Minister of Higher and Secondary Specialized Education of Uzbekistan; Mr. Fumihiko Kato, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan to Uzbekistan, Japanese Embassy; and Deputy Minister Kihei Maekawa of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT).
In addition, Nagoya University President Matsuo Seiichi, who was in charge of the meeting, gave the opening address and expressed his gratitude to the participants.
Afterward, a lecturer from the Minister of Higher and Secondary Specialized Education of Uzbekistan gave a keynote lecture on the higher education system in Uzbekistan and the country’s measures for human resources development.
Director Matsumoto of the Office for International Planning, Higher Education Policy Planning Division, Higher Education Bureau, MEXT, then gave a talk about globalization and Japanese universities and about the Top Global University Project led by MEXT.
The attendees talked about their past interactions and future prospects for Japan-Uzbekistan relations. The meeting was concluded with words from Vice President Benton.
