Non-degree Research Students (Kenkyusei)

Qualifications for enrollment
Applicants must have graduated from an accredited university and must have completed the course work in an accredited university or college (including a university or college with 16 years or less of total schooling) in a foreign country.
Selection of non-degree research students is based on the evaluation of submitted documents and no entrance examination is conducted.
Non-degree research students conduct their designated research under the guidance of an academic adviser and are allowed to audit other courses but no credits are awarded. Should the non-degree research students require credits, they must be registered simultaneously as credited auditors (kamokuto rishusei).
Research period
The research period for non-degree research students terminates at the end of the academic year (March 31 of the following year). In case students wish to extend the period of research, an extension up to a total of two years will be approved.

Exchange Students (Tokubetsu Chokogakusei)  |
Students of other universities who are taking classes at the undergraduate or graduate levels at this university. Most of them are undergraduate-level students. More information regarding exchange students is available here. |
Exchange Research Students (Tokubetsu Kenkyugakusei)  |
Students of other universities who are receiving guidance from supervisors at the graduate level at the University of Tsukuba. This classification is mainly for students who are in the 2nd year of their Master's degree programs and above.

Credited Auditors (Kamoku Rishusei) |
Qualifications for enrollment
Applicants who are considered academically capable of taking classes in their majors. Credits can be obtained upon passing the examination.

Students of Intensive Japanese Training (Nihongo Kenkyusei) |
Students who are receiving Japanese Government (Monbukagakusho) Scholarships and have attended intensive Japanese language training for six months before beginning their studies as research students.
