Campus Facilities

"This is not Japan, its altogether a different country", this is what most of the visitors to the University of Tsukuba comment. The University of Tsukuba is well known for its beautiful campus, from where Mt. Tsukuba can be seen. The loop line fringed with green rows of trees and promenades stretching as far as the eye can see are a few of those features that steal the visitors' heart away.

The University of Tsukuba Campus

The University of Tsukuba campus is located between Higashi Odori and Nishi Odori which run north to south and is divided into five areas.

North area: Ichonoya student dormitory
Central area: School of Humanities and Culture, School of Social and International Studies, School of Life and Environmental Sciences, School of Science and Engineering, School of Informatics, School of Human Sciences
South area: School of Health and Physical Education, School of Art and Design, Hirasuna and Oikoshi student dormitory
West area: Cluster of Medical Sciences
Kasuga area: School of Informatics

The campus extends 5km from north to south and 1km from east to west and is divided into five areas. Each area is linked by a loop road. A promenade called "Pede" and bicycle paths run through all five areas and reach to the center of Tsukuba city. Students living in student dormitories in the north area, south area, and Kasuga area commute by on-campus bus or by bicycle using the bicycle paths.

These innovative facilities are open to the public and used for domestic and international academic exchange, educational activity and sports events for citizens.

Residence Halls

The university of Tsukuba residence halls were established to offer its students excellent study environment along with the opportunity to experience autonomous civic life. A total of 60 residences with 3,472 private rooms, 269 double rooms, and 186 family rooms are located in Ichinoya, Hrasuna, Oikoshi, and kasuga Campus. Every room is furnished with a bed, a table, a washbasin, a dormitory telephone etc. One can afford to stay in the dormitory if things of personal use are arranged. Furthermore, every building has a laundry room, a communal kitchen, etc. Also each campus (excluding Kasuga campus) has a community center that has all the facilities necessary for day-to-day life such as a dining room, a bathhouse, a convenience store, and a beauty and hair salon.

In addition, the university makes sure the rooms are available to undergraduate freshmen on a priority basis. When the number of new applicants exceeds the available number of rooms, students coming to Tsukuba from different area are given priority over those local students who can possibly commute to the university from nearby areas. The residents have to pay a monthly rent of 6,700 yen besides common utility fee of 7,140 yen per month and electric charges (depending on individual usage). In addition, a sum of 3,000 yen per month is required if you make a contract for outside telephone lines.

Training facilities

The training facilities at the University of Tsukuba are established with the aim of facilitating various activities of students, staff, and faculty members of the university such as training, extracurricular activities, and recreation.

  • Kambara Hall
    This unique building that has a spacious courtyard surrounded by Japanese-style room and seminar rooms connected with a corridor is best suitable for meditation, tea ceremony and flower arrangement.

  • Tateyama Training Center
    Tateyama Training Center is located in the beach area with warm climate and is suitable for seminars and training camp of clubs.

  • Ishiuchi Training Center
    Ishiuchi Training Center is located in the middle of Ishiuchi, one of the popular places for skiing. Many people visit here for skiing in winter.

  • Yamanaka Training Center
    Yamanaka Training Center has training rooms, an athletic field, and tennis courts. It is suitable for seminar and circle training camps and used throughout the year.

Welfare facilities

There are plenty of welfare facilities in the University of Tsukuba including huge cafeterias, coffee shops, book stores. Particularly cafeteria and coffee shops are everywhere in the university for the convenience of students, staff, and faculty members. The welfare facilities are administered by Kosei-kai made up of 19 students, staff, and faculty members. Vice President who is in charge of education, students' life serves as the director of Kosei-kai and coordinate various opinions submitted from the three different standpoints.

    Tsukuba University Health Center provides mental health consultation at its counseling room, while contributing to improvement of students, staff, and faculty members.
