Preparatory Meeting for the Japan-Africa Academic Network (JAAN)
A preparatory meeting for the Japan-Africa Academic Network (JAAN) was organized by the University of Tsukuba in the Bunkyo Building on Tokyo campus on December 4. The objectives were to form the "ALL JAPAN" network to boost Japanese universities’ research activities in Africa‚ and promote research cooperation among them to share the individual research results.
It was held under the auspices of Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan (MOFA)‚ Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA)‚ and Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS)‚ in cooperation with Hokkaido University‚ Yokohama National University‚ Kyushu University‚ Nagasaki University‚ International Christian University (ICU)‚ and Meiji University.
Nearly 70 people from more than 30 universities and institutions participated in the meeting.
The meeting started with an opening speech by Vice President Yutaka Tsujinaka (the person in charge of global activities) of the University of Tsukuba.
Deputy Director-General Tomohiro Yamano (Higher Education Bureau‚ Ministry of Education‚ Culture‚ Sports‚ Science and Technology (MEXT))‚ Director Kansuke Nagaoka (First Middle East Division‚ Middle Eastern and African Affairs Bureau‚ Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan)‚ and His Excellency Mr. MARKOS Tekle Rike (Embassy of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia in Japan) made speech as guest speakers.
It was followed by opinion-exchange sessions.
The participants shared each university’s academic activity and experience of fostering human resources in Africa‚ and discussed future challenges.
They made concrete suggestions to build a network among the universities‚ and discussed feasible methods to realize the ideas. Ahead of the next year’s Tokyo International Conference on African Development V (TICAD V)‚ they shared each other’s thoughts on what kind of role should Japanese universities play for problem resolution and growth of African countries.
