Tandem Accelerator Complex

Tandem Electrostatic Accelerator

The Tandem Accelerator Complex (formerly Accelerator Center) was reorganized and established as a division of the Inter-department Education Research Institute. There are two tandem electrostatic accelerators with high energy multi-ion beams at the institution.
It aims to make advanced use of the accelerators in physics, engineering, chemistry, biology, medicine, environmental sciences, and interdisciplinary fields. Based on the work with the accelerators, the Complex attempts to carry out basic research and provide education to undergraduate and graduate students.

By the Great East Japan Earthquake on 11 March 2011, the 12UD Pelletron tandem accelerator suffered serious damages. We have a plan to install the 6 MV tandem accelerator system at the 2nd target room connecting the beam line to the present experimental facilities at the 1st target room. The 6 MV tandem accelerator will be used for AMS, IBA, nanotechnology science, heavy ion irradiation, nuclear physics and so forth. The construction of the new accelerator system is scheduled in the spring of 2014.
