College of Physics

Physics studies the fundamental laws that govern broad phenomena in nature, and also provides the foundations for present-day technologies. The College of Physics at the University of Tsukuba offers a curriculum through which students can obtain solid foundations in both classical and modern physics. They are also trained so that they learn how to consider matters flexibly and solve problems they may face in the future, by applying the acquired knowledge in physics. They will be prepared either to undertake graduate studies in physics, to enter industry, or to teach in school.

In the College of Physics, freshmen are provided with basic education in natural sciences, not just physics but also mathematics, chemistry, biology and geoscience. In the second and third years, students learn more advanced physics topics such as analytical mechanics, advanced electromagnetism, quantum mechanics, statistical mechanics and special relativity, based on the courses in the previous years. In the third and final years, students are introduced to the most advanced fields of physics, such as elementary particles, astrophysics, nuclear physics, condensed matter physics, and plasma physics. In addition to lectures, students will be trained through courses of various kinds, including recitations and laboratory works (including the usage of computers). In the final year, students study on individual subjects under the supervision of respective professors. About 80% of the students proceed to graduate schools after graduation.
