<description><![CDATA[&quot;Symposium on the Teaching Certificate Renewal Course for Academic Year 2011&quot; was held in the 3A Building in Area 3 at the University of Tsukuba on February 4&sbquo; 2012&sbquo; under the auspices of Ibaraki Prefectural Board of Education.<br /><br />The objective was to review the university's efforts and help improve the quality of the teaching certificate courses. It was held under the theme of&sbquo; &quot;the present and the future of the teaching certificate renewal course -look back on the university's efforts in the past three years&quot;.<br /><br />A total of 154 people participated in the course including incumbent teaching staff in Ibaraki Prefecture and those from Kagoshima Prefecture and Okinawa Prefecture.<br /><br />The symposium started with an opening speech by Vice President Teruo Higashi.<br />It was followed by a keynote lecture from Director Nobuya Takaoka of the National Center for Teacher's Development titled &quot;a style of teaching course needed in the future&quot;.<br /><br />A panel discussion was held after the symposium.<br />Director Takaoka&sbquo; three teaching staff who had received the course last year&sbquo; and other teaching staff of the University of Tsukuba attended as panelists.<br />Under the theme of&sbquo; &quot;the way how the teaching certificate course should be&quot;&sbquo; the participants discussed about the needed qualification and ability of teaching staff in the future&sbquo; from the view point of students.]]></description>

<title>The 8th Japan Blind Soccer National Title B2/3 Championship</title>

<description><![CDATA[The 8th Japan Blind Soccer National Title B2/3 Championship Game was held at a futsal ground in Koto Ward&sbquo; Tokyo on January 28 to 29.<br /><br />The N-flugels of the University of Tsukuba's Special Needs Education School for the Visually Impaired and the Saikyo Red Rockets took part in this tournament. <br /><br />Players are divided into some groups according to their eyesight&sbquo; and play games based on the rules of five-on-five futsal game. The &quot;B2/B3&quot; groups consist of partially-sighted student players. Players with corrected vision of 0.03 or less will join the B2 category&sbquo; and players with corrected vision of 0.1 or less will join the B3 category.<br />In this game&sbquo; players in B2 and B3 categories played the game together.<br /><br />After winning the four straight victories in preliminary matches&sbquo; the N-flugels defeated the opponent 3-1.<br />In the final game&sbquo; the N-flugels played against the SC Sfida&sbquo; the winner of the last year's match. They had a close game at first&sbquo; without winning a goal. However&sbquo; Mr. Kimihiro Nakazawa scored a goal&sbquo; taking a shoot from the right side 10 meter away from the goal. With goalkeeper Iwasaki's outstanding saves&sbquo; the N-flugels won the game by a score of 1-0.<br />Mr. Nakazawa won the MVP award&sbquo; and Mr. Iwasaki received the Best Keeper award after the game.<br /><br />Although the Saikyo Red Rockets consisted of less-experienced players&sbquo; they did well and took fourth place.]]></description>

<description><![CDATA[The 16th Meikei Tsukuba Grand Festival was held in the University Hall at the University of Tsukuba on January 21.<br /><br />The festival started in January&sbquo; 1996&sbquo; aiming to promote mutual friendship among graduates&sbquo; undergraduates&sbquo; and faculty members of the University of Tsukuba and its predecessor&sbquo; Tokyo University of Education&sbquo; and contribute to the development of the university.<br />This year the festival marks its 16th anniversary. Although it was raining on the day&sbquo; Nearly 200 people participate in the event. <br /><br />The festival was held under the theme of &quot;Kamosu&quot;&sbquo; which means to create something in a gradual manner. The word represents our hope that we would like to strengthen the bonds with people gradually&sbquo; after going through the difficult situation caused by the March disaster.<br /><br />An opening ceremony and performance of the university's message song&sbquo; &quot;IMAGINE THE FUTURE&quot;&sbquo; were held at the beginning of the festival.<br /><br />Afterward&sbquo; President Kenichi Hagiwara of the Sadoya Co.&sbquo;Ltd.&sbquo; a graduate of the Tokyo University of Education&sbquo; delivered a keynote lecture titled &quot;A brewing world&sbquo; the field you don't know -a story of professionals in wine and Japanese sake&quot;.<br />The lecture included talks about the past&sbquo; present&sbquo; and future of Japanese wine.<br />A panel discussion was followed his lecture. <br />Professor Hiroo Uchiyama of the Faculty of Life and Environmental Sciences&sbquo; who was engaged in the development of &quot;Kiri-no Hana&quot; (sake produced by the University of Tsukuba)&sbquo; and President Toshifumi Fujimura of the Raifuku Shuzo Corporation joined the discussion.<br />By taking brewing of wine and sake as example&sbquo; they talked about their feelings for their jobs. They talked about difficulties they had experienced on their jobs&sbquo; such as making their products attractive to consumers&sbquo; and explaining attractive points to them effectively.<br /><br />A get‐together meeting was held after the event.<br />&quot;Kagami biraki&quot; (to break a sake cask at a ceremony) was held with using &quot;Kiri-no Hana&quot;&sbquo; and Mr. Hagiwara and Mr. Fujimura gave a tip on enjoying wine and sake. <br />In addition&sbquo; members of the Cheerleading Club &quot;WINS&quot; of the University of Tsukuba&sbquo; made their performance. Participants sang &quot;Kirino Ha&quot; (a cheering song)&sbquo; with their arms crossed.<br /><br />The meeting provided a great opportunity to talk and exchange opinions with people of different generations and positions.]]></description>

<description><![CDATA[Mr. Didier Quentin&sbquo; chairperson of the Union for a Popular Movement (UMP)&sbquo; and his party visited the Core Laboratory for Algal Biomass and Energy System at the University of Tsukuba on February 1.<br /> Members of the Foreign Diplomacy Office&sbquo; International Division&sbquo; House of Representatives accompanied him to make a courtesy visit to President Nobuhiro Yamada of the university. The objective of his visit in Japan was to visit disaster-stricken areas in Tohoku and inspect renewable energy technologies.<br /><br />After the courtesy visit&sbquo; Mr. Didier Quentin had a familiar talk with Vice President Masafumi Akahira&sbquo; Vice President Yutaka Tsujinaka&sbquo; Vice President Minoru Yonekura&sbquo; and Professor Makoto Watanabe (Faculty of Life and Environmental Sciences). <br />They gave a brief explanation about the outline of the university and the renewable energy technology in which the university is involved.<br /><br />Subsequently&sbquo; they visited the algal biomass laboratory on campus&sbquo; one of the best algae laboratories in the world.<br />They received explanations on the researches about algae from Professor Watanabe.<br />]]></description>

<description><![CDATA[The 2nd Workshop by the Organization for the Promotion of Tsukuba-Based Global Innovation&sbquo; titled &quot;Think about the future science technology from Tsukuba&quot;&sbquo; was held in Kasuga Plaza at the University of Tsukuba on January 23.<br /><br />Since the Tsukuba Science City was registered as one of the special zones for international strategy by the government in December&sbquo; 2011&sbquo; the movement to create a new innovation against the issues of the country has been growing in each institution in the city. The objective of the workshop was to bring together the wisdom of key figures&sbquo; and help improve Tsukuba's innovation.<br /><br />Nearly 70 people including Deputy Mayor Hisashi Okada of Tsukuba City&sbquo; officials of the civil service&sbquo; research institutions&sbquo; private companies&sbquo; and local citizens participated in the workshop.<br />In addition&sbquo; many staff including Vice President Minoru Yonekura&sbquo; Professor Akira Matsumura (deputy chair of the Tsukuba University Hospital)&sbquo; and Professor Isao Inoue (Faculty of Medicine) took part in the event from the University of Tsukuba.<br /><br />The workshop started with an opening speech by Vice President Yonekura&sbquo; and it was followed by a lecture titled &quot;Science and technology's trend in developing countries&quot; by Mr. Yukihide Hayashi (senior fellow of the Japan Science and Technology Agency).<br /><br />In a questionnaire about the lecture&sbquo; 95 % of the participants answered; &quot;satisfied&quot;. <br />They made some requests in the questionnaire&sbquo; about measures and policies for the special zones and for corporate business&sbquo; and about a plan to establish a science park both inside and outside the country.<br /><br />They commented that the Organization for the Promotion of Tsukuba-Based Global Innovation is expected to play an active role in Tsukuba Science City.]]></description>

<description><![CDATA[The TX Technology Showcase in Tsukuba 2012 was held at the Tsukuba International Congress Center on January 13.<br />It was organized by 29 institutions and organizations including the Science Academy of Tsukuba (SAT)&sbquo; the Science and Technology Promotion Foundation of Ibaraki&sbquo; Ibaraki Prefecture&sbquo; Tsukuba City&sbquo; and the University of Tsukuba.<br /><br />The showcase was held under the theme of &quot;Flea market of science and technology directed from expanded Tokyo metropolitan areas&quot;.<br />The objective was to promote exchanges among researchers&sbquo; engineers&sbquo; companies&sbquo; and administrations in Tsukuba Science City&sbquo; where 2&sbquo;3000 researchers are conducting researches.<br /><br />It also aimed to provide an opportunity to meet fresh ideas and new venture opportunities for researches and individuals from companies.<br /><br />In the event&sbquo; a symposium titled &quot;Science and Technology that cause paradigm shift - Proposal from Tsukuba&quot; was held. Assistant Professor Sayaka Fujii of the Faculty of Engineering&sbquo; Information and Systems delivered a keynote lecture titled &quot;Occurrence of Major Earthquakes. <description><![CDATA[A lecture on &quot;Fostering of Global Human Resources at the University&quot; (the 7th Faculty Development (FD) Workshop) was held in the International Conference Room at the University Hall at the University of Tsukuba on January 1.<br /><br />Mr. Tamotsu Tokunaga (director of the National Institute for Educational Policy Research&sbquo; Ministry of Education&sbquo; Culture&sbquo; Sports&sbquo; Science and Technology (MEXT)) was invited to the lecture meeting as a guest speaker.<br />He delivered a lecture titled &quot;Hope for cultivation of global human resources at the University of Tsukuba&quot;.<br />The lecture content included the needs and the history of fostering global human resources at universities&sbquo; the way of educational administration in response to declining population&sbquo; and social situation both inside and outside the country.<br /><br />Director Tominaga expressed his opinion that the university is required to foster human resources who play an active role in business activities after graduation.<br />He said he expects the University of Tsukuba will foster human resources who exercise leadership in a group of various people who have different cultures and languages and are from developed and developing countries.<br /><br />Nearly 200 people including vice presidents&sbquo; provosts and chairs of the graduate school&sbquo; deans of the university&sbquo; teaching staff&sbquo; and students participated in the lecture meeting.<br />In addition to the University Hall&sbquo; the lecture was delivered by videoconference on Kasuga Area of Tsukuba Campus and Tokyo Campus.<br />]]></description>

<description><![CDATA[A tour to &quot;Daimyojin Waterfall&quot; was held on January 19&sbquo; 2012 at the Sugadaira Montane Research Center. With the fine weather of clear sky&sbquo; participants were getting sweaty while walking in the mountain. <br /><br />There were a number of footprints of animals on snow surface&sbquo; and Professor Ryuichiro Machida of the Faculty of Life and Environmental Sciences explained about them.<br /><br />On the way to the waterfall&sbquo; a serow appeared and surprised the participants. They were delighted to see the wild animal which they can't usually see.<br /><br />The participants commented after the tour&sbquo; &quot;The tour gave us a great opportunity that enables us to see the animal life which is peculiar to this season&quot;.<br /><br />The Shinano Mainichi Shimbun and &quot;Hodo Genba&quot;&sbquo; a news program by TV Shinshu Broadcasting (TSB)&sbquo; covered the news of &quot;Daimyojin Waterfall&quot; tour.<br /><br />The Daimyojin Waterfall Tour in Winter&sbquo; which has been held three times now&sbquo; will be held on January 22 and 25&sbquo; 2012 for the fiscal year 2011.]]></description>
