The University of Tsukuba is focusing on promoting internationalization as one of its key policies for the next midterm plan aiming at "coexistence with the world." The university has already established two overseas offices‚ the North African and Mediterranean Center for Research and Education and the International Center for Central Asian Research and Education. Moreover‚ the university was selected as one of the implementing institutions of the Project for Establishing Core Universities for Internationalization (Global 30) initiated by the Ministry of Education‚ Culture‚ Sports‚ Science‚ and Technology. This project began in 2009.

The University of Tsukuba has established its third international center in Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam and is planning to establish international centers in China and Germany.

The center has conducted activities based on those implemented by graduate schools of medical sciences and environmental sciences. These activities are carried out as part of programs adopted by MEXT under Support Program for Improving Graduate School Education‚ which include Initiatives for Attractive Education in Graduate Schools - Support Program to experience world standards (2005-2006) and the Support Program for Improving Graduate School Education - Personalized Medical-Education Renaissance Program (2008-2010). The center has also signed agreements for academic exchanges and cooperation with the Department of Science and Technology of Ho Chi Minh City‚ universities and research institutes in Ho Chi Minh City‚ Cho Ray Hospital (Ho Chi Minh City's largest hospital). In addition‚ the center has been carrying out substantive cooperative activities.

These agreements are applied to all the activities carried out by the University of Tsukuba‚ and it is anticipated that as many departments as possible will take part in the center's projects.

The dedication ceremony of the International Center was held at the Institute of Tropical Biology in Ho Chi Minh City on August 6‚ 2009.
