Kickoff Symposium: Sustainable Support for Female Researchers

"Kick off Symposium: Sustainable Support for Female Researchers – Promotion of Gender Equality in Tsukuba Science City" was held in the International Conference Room of the University Hall‚ University of Tsukuba‚ on February 23‚ 2010.

This symposium was held as part of educational activities relating to the support for female researchers in "Special Coordination Funds for Promoting Science and Technology: Development of Support Model for Female Researcher." The symposium was attended by a total of 140 internal and external staff‚ faculty members‚ and students.

The symposium started with greetings from University President Nobuhiro Yamada‚ Director-General Shinichiro Izumi of the Science and Technology Policy Bureau‚ Ministry of Education‚ Culture‚ Sports‚ Science and Technology‚ and Director Miho Fujisawa of the Gender Equality Bureau‚ Cabinet Office. This was followed by a lecture "Jyosei kara‚ Minority kara‚ Shuen kara umareru – Atarashii hasso no kanosei wo motomete [Seeking possibility of new idea created by women‚ minority‚ and other factors]" by Professor Yasuko Takezawa of Kyoto University.

Professor Akiko Yoshise (Head of the Office of Gender Equality) explained the basic principle and policy to promote gender equality in the University of Tsukuba and the history of "Tsukuba Daigaku Jyosei Kyoin Konwa Kai." Her talk also included the university's undertakings such as the establishment of consulting room for work life balance in "Sustainable Support for Female Researchers – the university's approach" and a common course related to gender equality.

A panel discussion titled "For the new way of life in Tsukuba" was conducted by attendees from six institutions in Tsukuba‚ including University of Tsukuba‚ National Institute for Materials Science‚ Forestry and Forest Products Research Institute‚ National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST)‚ and National Agriculture and Food Research Organization‚ and National Institute for Agro-Environmental Sciences. These institutions declared gender equality on September 8‚ 2010. In addition‚ reports from three institutions that have already been adopted for this program‚ were made on their achievements and specific support activities in the last three years. This was followed by active discussion. Posters and materials of the six institutions were also exhibited.
