2012 Open Seminar for High School Students

(Sugadaira Montane Research Center: 2012.08.06-9)

An annual four-day three-night seminar for high school students was held at the Sugadaira Montane Research Center from August 6 to 9‚ 2012. Twenty two biology enthusiast high school students across the country took part in the seminar and learned about nature under the cool summer in Sugadaira.

The theme for the seminar was "Observation of nature in highland - relationship among living things." Various hands-on trainings were carried out in the field‚ mountain area‚ and tree garden at the Sugadaira Montane Research Center. Hands-on trainings included the collection and observation of soil animals and microbes in the forest and fields‚ research on how many kinds of plant species are growing in the fields‚ and collection of various mushrooms in the forest garden. Students tackled many assignments by making trips between the fields and the laboratory and observing microbes using Scanning Electron Microscope.

The participating students were a little nervous at the beginning of the seminar‚ but soon they opened up and started working together in groups on the assignments. They were fascinated by live creatures they have seen for the first time and posed questions to the lecturers and graduate students whenever questions came to mind.

After the seminar‚ the participating students made some comments‚ "I was moved by nature and creatures that are rarely seen in our daily life"‚ "I come to like insects and mushrooms"‚ and "My desire to enter the University of Tsukuba grown stronger".
