Financial Support for Students in the Doctoral Program

The University of Tsukuba provides financial support (living & research allowance) to our promising doctoral students in the form of grants.

As one of the universities that leads promising students, the University of Tsukuba has awarded below three doctoral student support projects from JST from JST (Japan Science and Technology Agency).

  • Support for Pioneering Research Initiated by the Next Generation (SPRING)(2021-)
  • University Fellowship Establishment Program for Science and Technology Innovation Creation (Fellowship)(2021-2023)
  • Next-Generation AI Human Resource Development Program
    "Broadening Opportunities for Outstanding young researchers and doctoral students in STrategic areas (BOOST)"

The university is fostering doctoral students who will create new value and contribute to solving global issues by connecting with diverse human resources beyond the borders of conventional academic disciplines and national borders.


■【Advance Notice】Call for Applications for New Students Eligible for Research Incentive Funds in AY 2024

We plan to begin accepting applications for new students who are eligible for research incentive funds in May 2024. Applications will be accepted for the above programs at the same time*.

We request all doctoral students at the University of Tsukuba who are eager to develop diverse career paths, to follow the tentative form below to begin your preparation.
Especially, please start preparing your research achievements and research plan (approximately 750 English words), which will take long time to prepare. Applicants may apply to more than one program if they meet the requirements, but will not be selected in duplicate. Applications will be accepted through the University of Tsukuba's application support system u-Rad.

○AMOUNT IN AY 2024

  • Research expenses
  • Annual incentive research fund ranging from 1,980,000 yen to 2,400,000 yen per person (equivalent to living expenses)

○APPLICATION TARGET:Doctoral Student of the University of Tsukuba in

  • 3-year doctoral program
  • 3rd year and above of a 5-year doctoral program
  • 4-year doctoral program in medicine

* Next-Generation AI Human Resource Development Program (BOOST) is open only to 1st year students in a doctoral program, a 3-year doctoral program, a 4-year doctoral program in medical sciences, or 3rd year students in a 5-year doctoral program.

○INELIGIBLE STUDENT

  • Those who are employed as JSPS Postdoctoral Fellows (DC)
  • Those who receive support through the Japanese Government Scholarship Program (MEXT Scholarship)
  • Those who receive support from their home government
  • Those who receive educational expenses of the WISE Program (Doctoral Program for World-leading Innovative & Smart Education) or a scholarship of a sufficient level (2,400,000 million or more per year)
  • Those who have a sufficient level of stable income (2,400,000 million or more per year) from the company to which they belong (excluding TAs, RAs, part-time workers)
  • Those who are on leave of absence as of April 2024
  • Those who are enrolled in the university beyond the standard term of study

○DURATION OF SUPPORT

Maximum 3 years, but maximum 4 years for a 4-year doctoral program in medicine (within the standard period of enrollment)


Support for Pioneering Research Initiated by the Next Generation (SPRING)

■Purpose of the Project

  • Supporting PhD students to devote themselves to unrestricted, challenging and interdisciplinary research projects
  • Supporting the students to devote themselves to their own research by covering their living expenses.
  • Assisting promising students to become doctorate degree holders who are ready for a variety of diverse and important careers
