• Entrance Fee Exemption and Tuition Waiver


    Undergraduate and graduate students who face financial difficulties and who demonstrate excellent academic records may be exempt from part or all of the tuition payments.
     The tuition exemption system, however, is not available for non-degree research students and credited auditors.
     For further details, please inquire at the Division of Student Welfare, Department of Student
    Affairs (Financial Support), which is located on the 3rd floor of the Student Plaza or your Academic Service Office (Registrar and Student Support).

    Entrance Fee Exemption

    Please note that different application requirements will be applied to students joining undergraduate courses and graduate courses.


    Eligibility: Undergraduate Students

    1. Those recognized as having difficulty in paying the entrance fee due to the death of the person primarily responsible for the payment within the past one year prior to admission, or due to damage sustained by the student or the person responsible for the payment of entrance fee caused by wind, flood or other natural disasters.

    2. Those recognized by the university president as having reasons similar to the ones above, in line with the university rules.

     Note: The above mentioned are eligibility requirements for applying for entrance fee exemption.

     Students who have difficulty in paying entrance fee due to economic reasons prior to the deadline and are recognized as having outstanding academic capabilities are eligible for deferred payment of entrance fee.


    Eligibility: Graduate Students

    1. Those recognized as having difficulty in paying entrance fee due to economic reasons prior to the deadline and are recognized as having outstanding academic capabilities.

    2. Those recognized as having difficulty in paying the entrance fee due to the death of the person primarily responsible for the payment within the past one year prior to admission, or due to damage sustained by the student or the person responsible for the payment of entrance fee caused by wind, flood or other natural disasters.

    3. Those recognized by the university president as having reasons similar to the ones above, in line with the university rules.

    Note: Students who fall under one of the above 1-3 categories are eligible for applying for entrance fee exemption or deferred payment.


    Application procedure: Students who are applying for entrance fee exemption or deferred payment are requested to submit application forms included in the document for enrollment guidance and other required documents at the time of the admission procedure.

    Students who are denied entrance fee exemption or received a waiver of only half the tuition fee can apply for deferred payment.

    The University of Tsukuba will be accepting applications for exemption of tuition for the two periods of April-September and October-March.


    Application Acceptance Period

    - The First Period (tuition exemption for April-September): From beginning of February to middle of February (Current Students)

    - The Second Period (tuition exemption for October-March): From Beginning of July to End of July

    Eligible Applicants: Students who fall under one of the following categories.

    1. - Those recognized as having difficulty in paying tuition due to economic reasons before the deadline and are recognized as having outstanding academic capabilities.

    2. - Those recognized by the university president as having reasons similar to the ones above, in line with the university rules.

    Main changes in application process from the second (fall) semester

    1. Doctor frame
    Present exemption selection frames (international students frame / except international students frame) are changed to three frames (undergraduate/ master frame for international students, undergraduate/ master frame for except international students and doctor frame) to aim to be enhanced the tuition fees exemption for doctor’s program,. Student of Doctor frame refers to continuing three-year doctoral programs, threeyear doctoral programs and four-year degree programs, studying medical sciences in the Graduate School of Comprehensive Human Science or transfer admission student in continuous five-year doctoral programs at third-year degree, student studying more than two years in continuous five-year doctoral programs.

    2.Change of amount of applicant’s deduction
    Revise the amount of applicant’s special deduction and equivalent amount of payment of admission fees and equivalent amount of payment of the previous year’s tuition fees are added to amount of special deduction and equivalent amount of exemption, etc. is not treated as income.
