Special Information Seminar "Health Services for Foreigners in Tsukuba"

A special information seminar titled "Health Services for Foreigners in Tsukuba" was held on July 18. The Division of Student Exchange, Department of Student Affairs organized the seminar, in cooperation with the Global Commons and the University Health Center. About 60 international students attended the seminar.

Tsukuba City has implemented numerous efforts to promote people's health and provide medical support. The University Health Center, likewise, provides medical checkup annually, and applies emergency first aid and offers health consultations for students. However, there was also a case where an international student was in grave condition, due to a lack of understanding of medical support systems for international students. Taking this situation seriously, the university organized the seminar to improve students' understanding of the health support systems that are available for them.

In the first session of the seminar, officials from the Tsukuba City Hall, including the Health Promotion Division, the National Health Insurance Division, the Medical Welfare and Pension Division, and the International Exchange Office, gave lectures. They talked about hints and tips on the medical consultation and the medical checkup for younger people, and gave an overview of the National Health Insurance and the Medical Welfare System (Marufuku).

In the second session, Associate Professor Tohru Sakamoto of the Faculty of Medicine gave a lecture titled "Supporting your health". He talked about the medical checkup held on campus and about the negative health effects caused by smoking. A lively question and answer session ensued among the participants. They asked many questions, including about the medical checkups that are eligible for subsidies and about the payment method for the national health insurance premiums.

The seminar is expected to promote understanding of health and medical support for international students and to boost their health consciousness. The Division of Student Exchange intends to continue to hold the seminar in the future.
