University of Tsukuba Wins GOLD and Best Practice Award in "work with Pride 2018"
A voluntary association, work with Pride (wwP), gave awards to companies and organizations in honor of their efforts to improve the working environment for LGBT people. Receiving a high evaluation for its effort, the University of Tsukuba won GOLD in this event for two consecutive years. It is the first achievement as a university to win awards for the second consecutive year.
The University of Tsukuba aims to be an open university in all aspects. The university believes that supporting people of diverse backgrounds to be active will lead to create innovation. The university intends to continue efforts to promote diversity on campus.
About The PRIDE Index
The PRIDE Index is the benchmark for better working environment to support the promotion and institutionalization of diversity management relating to sexual minorities in Japan, formulated by a private organization, work with Pride, in 2016. For the PRIDE Index 2018, companies and organizations are evaluated by 5 index categories - Policy, Representation, Inspiration, Development and Engagement/Empowerment, and ranked as Gold, Silver and Bronze. The award is evaluated based on activities from October 1st, 2017 to September 31st, 2018.

On the evaluation of our approach
There are detailed evaluation items in each indicator mentioned above. If two or more items per index are satisfied, one point is given. We got the scores of all five indicators and got GOLD evaluations with five points outstanding.
On our approach
Our university revised and publicly announced the "Basic Principles and Handling Guidelines of the University of Tsukuba on LGBT, etc." in March 2017. This revised edition has received high praise from other universities and become a role model of subsequent guidelines prepared by several universities. We have created an ally symbol mark under the collaboration between students and the Center for Diversity, Accessibility and Career Development (DAC Center). The University of Tsukuba received the GOLD award for having been recognized for these facts and activities.

In this context an ally means a person who recognizes the existence of diverse sexualities including not only LGBT but also so-called straight lines and expresses being together, regardless of the parties or non-parties. The mark was created under the collaboration between students and the DAC Center in March 2018 and is used effectively to support the promotion of awareness-rising activity related to LGBT.
