The 2018 Ten Outstanding Young Persons of the World (TOYP) by the Junior Chamber International (JCI)

Associate Professor Dr. Lamichhane Kamal of the University of Tsukuba (CRICED) has been chosen as one of "The Ten Outstanding Young Persons (TOYP) of the World" for 2018 by the Junior Chamber International (JCI) * in the academic leadership and accomplishment category.

Dr. Kamal was born in Nepal with visual impairments which inhibited him from attending school until he was 12. He experienced first-hand how persons with disabilities are often deprived of receiving an education. Dr. Lamichhane who first came to Japan as a trainee later obtained his M.A. in Education (Special Needs Education) from the University of Tsukuba and PhD from The University of Tokyo in 2010 before joining the University of Tsukuba as faculty member. As a student in Japan, he learned about the Japanese welfare system as well as its disability-friendly infrastructure. His great interest in learning more about equal access after seeing the situation in Japan as compared to Nepal, his home country, led him to his research studies in disability studies, education and economic empowerment. He became the first visually impaired person in Nepal to obtain a doctorate degree.

*JCI has networks in more than 125 countries, and each year it honors ten outstanding young people under the age of 40 for their innovative actions, extraordinary achievement and dedication to serving others. Along with the panel of judges, JCI members and active citizens all over the world voted online to do the final selection. This year's honorees hailed from ten different countries representing Asia, Africa and Europe.
