The 4th Cultural Exchange "ORIGAMI Workshop"

The "ORIGAMI Workshop" was held at Student Commons on Tsukuba Campus on February 8, 2019. The workshop aimed at introducing Japanese culture to international faculty and staff and their families at the University of Tsukuba, and promoting exchanges among them as part of cultural exchange programs, organized by the International Support Office of Global Commons. We have introduced various Japanese culture including floral arrangements, tea ceremony, and Japanese cooking as an annual event. This year's workshop introduced Japan's doll festival "hinamatsuri", a traditional event in spring through the art of paper folding.

The workshop was filled to capacity, and a total of 20 people including researchers and students from various countries tried folding hinamatsuri dolls and traditional cranes using colorful Japanese chiyogami paper, under the guidance of Keiko Maruyama, a former staff of the University of Tsukuba. These workshop attendees commented that they had learned Japanese traditional culture and had an excellent experience. After the workshop they took their origami home with a smile.

The Global Commons intends to continue providing opportunities to promote intercultural exchanges at the University of Tsukuba. If you have any opinions or requests for the Cultural Exchange Workshop, please contact us the following email address.
