Japanese Culture Week

The Office of International Exchange Support, Student Support Center, in cooperation with the Global Commons, Tsukuba-Plant Innovation Research Center (T-PIRC), the Office of Development, and the Division of Student Welfare held a series of events as part of the "Japanese Culture Week", from January 17 (Tuesday) to 20 (Friday) 2023. These events were held at the Student Commons to promote globalization on campus.


- Flower Arrangement "Ikebana" Performance: The Ikenobo Flower Arrangement Club performed the arrangement of 10 pieces of flowers.
- Official UT Merchandise Shop: The face-to-face shop was crowded, mainly with international students returning to their home countries.
- GET RICE! : Approx. 500 students received 3 kg of rice each over two days.
- Furumai Mochi: Mochi pounding performance and distribution of freshly pounded rice cakes.
- Kendo kata performance: With the cooperation of two students who volunteered to perform kendo kata.
- Rakugo performance: The University of Tsukuba's Rakugo Society performed "Chiritotechin" and "Tsuru".
- Kimono and yukata dressing experience: For international students only, and it needed a previous reservation. After dressing, the students had time to take pictures.
- "Kakizome" calligraphy experience: This is always popular as a Japanese cultural experience. Participants enjoyed the calligraphy.
- New Year's games: Participants enjoyed playing with traditional Japanese toys like Koma, kendama, and fukuwarai.
- Calligraphy exhibition: Volunteer students of the School of Arts and Design exhibited their New Year's calligraphy.


A total of 1,047 people participated throughout the event period. We will continue to provide international exchange opportunities on campus to promote one of the slogans of the university, "Internationality in Everyday Life".
