11th SEAMEO-Tsukuba University Symposium Held

11th SEAMEO-University of Tsukuba Symposium, one of the events for Celebrating the 151st and 50th Anniversary of the University of Tsukuba, was held from February 20 to 22, 2023.


Supported by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT), and under the theme "Technology and Values-Driven Transformation in Education," which is one of the timely topics in the current world, speakers of various backgrounds contributed to the symposium.


The opening ceremony on February 20, 2023, featured Dr. Caroline Fern BENTON, Vice President of the University of Tsukuba, Dr. Ethel Agnes Pascua, SEAMEO Director, and KITAYAMA Koji, MEXT. The six sessions throughout three days served as a great opportunity to review ongoing education as well as the international movement, such as OECD Education 2030, and get the future visions for education under the era of digital society.


At the closing ceremony, CRICED Director Prof. Isoda thanked SEAMEO and SEAMEO Director Dr Ethel, who will retire in March. The event was a great success, with 15,305 people registering in advance and 16,983 YouTube views on Day 1, 13,427 on Day 2, and 10,411 on Day 3 at the end of the event. In terms of viewing counts, the 11th symposium has already exceeded the 10th SEAMEO-UT Symposium held last February, which had marked more than 110,000 annual viewing count.


The Symposium was presented by 30 speakers from 10 countries: Japan, France, Germany, New Zealand, Philippines, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam, Singapore,


  • 9 speakers from Japan: MEXT, UT, NIT (KOSEN), School
  • 11 speakers from SEAMEO Secretariat and SEAMEO Centres
  • 3 speakers represented by the Ministry of Education of Thailand, Malaysia, and Indonesia
  • 4 speakers from partners: UNESCO Paris, UIL Germany, New Zealand, King Mongkut's University of Technology
  • 3 speakers from winners of the 2021 and 2022 SEAMEO-Japan ESD Award

From the University of Tsukuba, Associate Professor KAWAGUCHI Jun and Professor ISODA Masami from the Department of Humanities, Associate Professor OHNIWA Ryosuke from the Department of Medicine, and Professors YOSHIDA Kenichi and TATEMOTO Yoshikazu from the affiliated Sakado High School contributed to the session as speakers. Associate Professor NOMURA Nakao served as a moderator and activated the discussion.
