UNIVERSITY OF TSUKUBA NIGHT 2026 Brings Together Startups and Global Partners in Cambridge

From September 9 to 11, UNIVERSITY OF TSUKUBA NIGHT 2026 was held in Cambridge, Massachusetts, bringing together researchers, startups, university partners, industry representatives, and members of the local innovation community.

The centerpiece of the three-day program took place on September 10, when the University of Tsukuba hosted UNIVERSITY OF TSUKUBA NIGHT 2026 as a special edition of Venture Café Cambridge's weekly Thursday Gathering at the Cambridge Innovation Center (CIC). For the second consecutive year, the event was held with support from the Japan Agency for Medical Research and Development (AMED). The main program began with opening remarks and introductions, followed by the MedTech and Biotech pitch sessions and two poster and networking sessions. The program concluded with the presentation of the Audience Choice Awards.

The opening program featured a video message from President NAGATA Kyosuke, followed by remarks from Maria Zuber, Presidential Advisor for Science and Technology Policy at MIT; TAKAHASHI Seiichiro, Consul General of Japan in Boston; and TANNO Nobuhiro of the AMED Global Hub (Boston). MACHINO Takeshi, Vice Director of the Tsukuba Clinical Research & Development Organization (T-CReDO), then introduced the pitch program.

A total of 17 teams participated in the main pitch event, presenting their technologies, research outcomes, and business concepts in one-minute flash talks. Ten teams presented in the MedTech session and seven in the Biotech session. The presenters included startups and research teams from the University of Tsukuba as well as teams nominated by overseas university partners, including the University of Bordeaux, National Cheng Kung University, The Ohio State University, Al-Farabi Kazakh National University, and Ruhr University Bochum.

Following the pitch sessions, participants continued their discussions during the poster and networking sessions, providing opportunities for researchers, entrepreneurs, investors, industry representatives, and university partners to exchange ideas and explore possibilities for future collaboration.

The program also featured Audience Choice Awards in the MedTech and Biotech categories. Vesica AI received the MedTech Audience Choice Award, while FerroptoCure Inc. received the Biotech Audience Choice Award.

Earlier that afternoon, a seminar session was held at CIC. Following opening remarks by Vice President for Collaborative Research NAKAUCHI Yasushi, NAKAJIMA Daiki, Director, Business Development, JETRO New York, gave a presentation entitled "Activities of JETRO Startup." MIZUI Yoshiharu, President of Eisai Innovation, Inc., then spoke on "The Latest Trends in the U.S. Venture Ecosystem: Perspectives from CVC and VC."

The three-day program began on September 9 with the University of Tsukuba-Astellas Joint Pitch Event at the Astellas Life Sciences Center in Cambridge. Six teams presented during the event, which also featured a panel discussion entitled "Building for Impact: Translating Breakthrough Science into Real-World Therapies." The day concluded with a kickoff meeting at SHY BIRD where presenters and other participants had an opportunity to meet and network informally.

On September 11, participants visited LabCentral, a leading life-sciences startup incubator in Cambridge. Throughout the three-day program, time was also set aside for participants to arrange individual meetings with potential collaborators, investors, researchers, and other members of the Boston/Cambridge innovation ecosystem.

UNIVERSITY OF TSUKUBA NIGHT provides a platform for showcasing research-driven innovation from the University of Tsukuba while strengthening connections with the Boston/Cambridge innovation ecosystem. Building on the 2024 and 2025 events, this year's program further expanded its international dimension by welcoming startups and entrepreneurial teams from overseas partner institutions.

A total of 452 participants attended the September 10 program, including representatives from universities, industry, government organizations, startups, and the local innovation community. Across the three-day program, participants exchanged perspectives on healthcare innovation, entrepreneurship, and opportunities for international academia-industry collaboration.

Through initiatives such as UNIVERSITY OF TSUKUBA NIGHT, the University of Tsukuba will continue to promote the social implementation of research outcomes, support the growth of university-based startups, and strengthen its networks with overseas partner institutions and the Boston/Cambridge innovation ecosystem.
