Advantages of Studying at the University of Tsukuba in My Career and Life

Completing my PhD in medical sciences with a focus on tumor immunity in 2023 provided me with a robust foundation in cutting-edge research. The state-of-the-art facilities and collaborative environment at the University of Tsukuba honed my analytical skills and innovative thinking, driving my current career trajectory in medical research.

Moreover, working alongside a diverse community of international and Japanese scholars fostered essential cross-cultural communication skills. These lifelong connections and alumni networks are vital in today's globalized scientific community.

My Fondest Memories as a Student

I recall the excitement of running my experiments, preparing for presentations, or attending journal clubs. But beyond this rigorous research, I deeply cherish the supportive network of my colleagues, mentors, and advisors. The peaceful, academic environment of Tsukuba offered the perfect backdrop to balance intense laboratory work with family life alongside my wife, Menna, and our sons. The mentorship and lifelong friendships formed during my time there built the foundation and resilience that continue to drive my career today.

Message to Students of the University of Tsukuba

To current and future students at the University of Tsukuba: I encourage you to fully immerse yourselves in the university's unique and collaborative environment. A student's journey, especially in a highly ranked but demanding university like ours, can test one's resilience. There will be long days in the labs, between classes, troubleshooting complex experiments, or fine-tuning rigorous training. Embrace these challenges; the state-of-the-art training you receive here will become the bedrock of your career.

Equally important is the community you build. The international network and friendships you form in Tsukuba will support you globally long after graduation. Engage with your peers and remember to maintain a healthy work-life balance. Step away from the lab to explore Japan, or simply enjoy a soccer game with friends on the university field, or a homemade meal with your family. Stay curious, remain persistent in your research, and trust that the foundation you build at Tsukuba will open doors worldwide, just as it paved the way for my own career in the United States.
