University of Tsukuba Students Selected in the Top 20 in The James Dyson Award 2017

"Telewheelchair", developed by a research group led by Assistant Professor Yoichi Ochiai of the Faculty of Library, Information and Media Science, has been selected as one of the top 20 in The James Dyson Award 2017. Mr. Satoshi Hashizume (1st-year student, Master's Program in Library, Information and Media Studies, Graduate School of Library, Information and Media Studies); Mr. Ippei Suzuki (3rd-year student, College of Media Arts, Science and Technology, School of Informatics); and Mr. Kazuki Takazawa (1st-year student, Master's Program in Library, Information and Media Studies, Graduate School of Library, Information and Media Studies) are the members of the research group.


The James Dyson Award (JDA), organized by The James Dyson Foundation, is an international student design competition, open in 23 countries around the world. More than 1,000 entries from 23 countries around the world will be reviewed through a number of stages. The first round of judging takes place at the regional level. A local panel of design and engineering professionals review all of the entries in their region to choose one national winner and 4 national finalists. National finalists from each region then move on to the second stage of judging. At this stage a panel of Dyson design engineers review all of the finalists and select the Top 20 projects to move on to the final stage. Finally, James Dyson reviews the Top 20 designs and picks the International Winner and two International Runners-Up. (Referred from the JDA website.)

The James Dyson Award has been launched by Sir James Dyson, the founder of Dyson Ltd.
It is an international design award that celebrates university student invention to inspire the next generation of design engineers. This year marked the 12th anniversary of The James Dyson Award. Under the theme of "Design something that solves a problem", the international design competition is run in 23 countries in the world.


The international winner will be announced on the JDA website on October 26.
