Good news for customers and farmers: sweet tomato —Discovery of new sweet tomato mutant and its gene of parthenogenesis

Tomato is one of the main vegetables to be produced through four seasons all over the world because of its function of diet vegetable and also as its health effect and good taste. Recently, tomatoes with high sugar content have been more produced by the development of high-stress growing technology, which would lead to the higher consumption and production of tomatoes. However, under the environment of high-stress growing technology, the amount of harvested tomatoes decreased drastically (Sometimes drop into a half amount). To cover the decrease, tomatoes with high sugar content are expensive in the market. Because of the situation, farmers highly expect the new development of high sugar content tomatoes with the regular and stable production proves through four seasons.Tomato is one of the main vegetables to be produced through four seasons all over the world because of its function of diet vegetable and also as its health effect and good taste. Professor Hiroshi Ezura, Researcher Jyunichiro Masuda, and Associate Professor Toru Ariizumi of Faculty of Life and Environmental Sciences at the University of Tsukuba discovered the new plant materials to show both apogamy and high sugar content, and they succeeded in identify the candidate of related genome in tomatoes. In this study, they found the new apogamy from mass mutant group of tomatoes called "micro-tom" at Genome experiment center Genome Research Center of the Tsukuba University and confirmed that the tomatoes are high sugar content. The effective use of new kind of tomatoes with high sugar content and apogamy would realize producing tomatoes to meet the demands of consumers and needs of farmers at the same time.
