What sparked your interest in this university?
The University of Tsukuba stands out as a distinguished national research university, renowned for its academic excellence, innovative research, and strong sporting tradition. Its expansive green campus particularly appeals to me as someone who values nature and a peaceful learning environment. I was also determined to pursue an interdisciplinary education centered on problem-based learning, and the BPGI program aligns perfectly with my academic interests and career aspirations. As I explored the university further, I was inspired by its rich Olympic heritage, which resonated deeply with me as an athlete. Overall, I believe the University of Tsukuba would help me grow not only in my future career but also as an individual, and these qualities ultimately inspired me to choose this university.
What aspects of Japanese culture or customs surprised you? How did you adapt to these differences?
Coming from Sri Lanka, I found Japan's culture and traditions to be both different and fascinating. From the food, etiquette, and traditional attire to the respect and consideration shown in everyday interactions, many aspects of Japanese society left a lasting impression on me. Although these differences were new, I adapted quickly by observing local customs, respecting social norms, and learning from those around me. The kindness and support of the people made the transition smooth and helped me feel welcomed from the beginning. I also greatly appreciate Japan's efficient and punctual public transportation system, which reflects the country's strong sense of responsibility and discipline. Experiencing these cultural differences has broadened my perspective and strengthened my adaptability and appreciation for diversity.
What do you enjoy about Tsukuba?
One of the aspects I appreciate the most about the University of Tsukuba is its beautiful green campus, where the natural surroundings create a peaceful and inspiring learning environment. Despite its tranquil setting, the university is conveniently located near Tokyo, allowing students to experience both nature and the vibrant city life. Moreover, the University of Tsukuba provides numerous opportunities for personal and professional growth. During my time here, I served as a teaching assistant for the All Japan High School Forum, organized International Day as Vice President of the Union of Tsukuba International Association, and hosted university events as a master of ceremonies. These meaningful experiences have made me truly appreciate my life at the University of Tsukuba.
What do you hope to achieve during your time here?
As a Global Issues student, I aspire to deepen my understanding of international development, global governance, and the Sustainable Development Goals through the University of Tsukuba's interdisciplinary curriculum. Studying in Tsukuba Science City also provides valuable exposure to cutting-edge research and evidence-based policies to address contemporary global challenges. My primary goal is to acquire a broad and comprehensive foundation of knowledge on global issues, policy making, and sustainability while achieving outstanding academic achievements, thereby preparing myself for future academic pursuits and a meaningful professional career. Beyond academics, I intend to actively participate in the university's diverse extracurricular and sporting activities, enabling me to build meaningful connections, broaden my perspectives, and enrich my overall university experience.
What do you think makes the University of Tsukuba special?
One of the University of Tsukuba's greatest strengths is its diverse international community and the commitment to fostering global perspectives and intercultural understanding. This is reflected by the numerous multicultural learning opportunities offered by the university, many supported by scholarships. I was fortunate to participate in two of these programs, including one in Taiwan, which became a turning point in deciding my future field of study. Beyond academics, research, and sports, the university also hosts many festivals and campus events that allow students to relax, enjoy, connect, and build lasting friendships. This balance between academic excellence and a vibrant campus life creates a supportive environment where students can grow both personally and professionally, making the University of Tsukuba truly special.
